2012-02-01 09:42:01 by Tracey Lynn Q: I have recently gotten into the music of Helen Merrill, a jazz vocalist who was popular in the 1950s, and who sang mostly pop and jazz standards. What I want to know is, what makes one a jazz singer? Helen Merrill sang a lot of the same songs as Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney, but Clooney and Garland were considered pop singers, not jazz. It's the same with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin vs. Mel Torme -- why is Torme classified as jazz while the other two are considered pop? Sinatra is *never* classified as jazz, although he sang jazz standards. You're missing my point. (3 months, 3 weeks, 4 days, and 4 hours ago.)

2009-11-11 15:11:59 by Ed Bob Q: Hello All, Im a 25yr young wanna be musician, but non the less music fanatic. I have been compiling my MP3 music library for about 10 years and have always gotten compliments on my diversity of collection. In College I was "That Guy" who always had the mix CDs, or was on the Computer making the playlist on the fly during parties. I already possess the ability to read a crowd and the environment to determine what genre, and tempo of music to play, because I have been doing it for years at Parties and family functions. I was really into the Hip-Hop DJs Dirty Harry, Vlad, and Green Lantern to the extent that I made my own 20 Mashup/Blend CD called "Wasted Talent" complete with 5 Interludes, though it mainly appeals to the HardCore Rap audience. I wanted to know if anyone could give me advice on 1) the pros and cons of different types of music media (Vinyl, MP3 on CD, MP3 On Laptop) 2) Equipment based on which media you Recommend using 3) Self Promotion (business Cards, doing gigs for Free, how you get paid) The Genres I know, Best To Least are: 1) Hip Hop and R&B (Jay-Z, 112, Slick Rick, RUN DMC, NWA, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Bel Biv Devoe, Mary J Blidge, Drake, Mariah Carey, Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, Heavy D, Salt n Peppa, Lil Wayne, Maxwell, Mase, Notorious B.I.G., Erykah Badu, The Roots, Tone Def, Dead Prez, Diplomats, Kanye West, D'Angelo, Xecutioners, The Fugees) 2) Rock (Beatles, My Chemical Romance,Billy Joel,Nirvana,30 Seconds to Mars, to Richie Valens, GNR, Aerosmith, Elvis, War, Saliva, Creed, Cream, Lynryd Skynrd, Blue Oyster Cult, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Panic at the Disco, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Jefferson Airplane, Boston) 3) Rhythem and Blues and Pop (ABBA, James Brown, Jackson 5, Beach Boys, Carol King, , Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Knarles Barkley, Supremes, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, The Whispers, Roberta Flak, Five for Fighting, Switchfoot,) 4) Reggae, Soca, Calypso (Rihanna, Bob Marley, Damian Marley, Collie Buddz, Sean Paul, Lil Vicious, Elephant Man, Rupee, Wayne Wonder, Lady Shaw) 5) Jazz & Vocal(Mostly Older Jazz, Miles Davis, Billi Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Neil Diamond, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse) 5) Blues (Etta James, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker) 6)Country (Johnny Cash, Josh Turner, Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, Pat Green, Martina Mcbride, Allison Krause, Trish Yearwood, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley) 7)Latin (Shakria, Enrique and Julio Eglesias, Ricardo Ajurano, Selena, Marc Anthony) 7)Arab Influence (Fairuz, Amr Diab, Cheb Khaled) 6)Techno, Trance, House (Tiesto, Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, SandStorm) To name afew artist from my collection. 2011-05-03 17:11:22 Q: I've got Broadway music coming out of my ears. 40s, 50s, and 60s groups. Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, the Beatles, and just about every Doo Wop group ever. I listen to Classical and always put on Celtic to go to sleep at night. I like all sorts of multicultural music - Irish, Arabic, Norwegian, Latin, Italian, Brazillian, Salsa. I love Folk music, and I also listen to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas, Rockapella, the Ditty Bopps, Kristin Chenoweth, Ingrid Michaelson, Celtic Woman, and Billy Joel, just to name a few. So the problem? I'm sick of my music. My friend updated my collection just two weeks ago with Superbus, MOVITS!, Scouting For Girls, Paramore, Avril Lavigne, Coldplay, and a bunch of 80s music, but I've already gone through them. I've played them so much that I'm sick of them. What other music do you suggest? I've been using Pandora to find new music but I can't come up with a starter song or group that doesn't just give me all of my old music. I'll try any and everything so let me know what you listen to. Thanks! (1 year, 1 month, 2 weeks, 4 days, and 21 hours ago.)

2008-07-16 20:44:36 by Seebs Q: I'm trying to classify my iTunes music I got from my dad, which includes multiple volumes of 50's music from the likes of Eddie Fisher, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, and Perry Como. It's obviously very separate from the emerging rock sound from Buddy Holly and Elvis with the fun black influence, and forget any connection to Motown! Much of this music predates that, but some is contemporary. So...what is it? Does Frank Sinatra fit in with that group? Is it swing? Big band? Those don't seem to fit to me. What IS the 'fabulous fifties?' Not classical...classical is Mozart, Bach, orchestral and opera. How is Que Sera Sera blues or jazz? (4 years, 2 months, 3 days, and 18 hours ago.)

A: I guess if you were gonna try and fit Sinatra into that group you could call it 'Standards" or 50's Pop...Many of those artists you listed cross over to Jazz as well. (4 years, 2 months, and 15 hours ago.)

2011-03-20 23:52:55 by Aznjiang0220 ~♥~ Q: I need some jazz standards from the 50s and the piano sheet that goes with the song. I'm going to sing a solo and I need some 50s music, which is asked by my music teacher. I went on musicnotes.com but is there anywhere else I can find piano sheet music that has 50s jazz standards? Bonus Q: I also need a song to sing but the only artists I can think of is Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. Again its the 50s (1 year, 3 months, 6 days, and 14 hours ago.)
