A: I didn't even know there was a video until I saw this question. I think the song, Dark Blue, in general is about that one person that no matter what's going on around you, you'll always focus on that one person ("When I'm here with you I said the world could be burning and burning down"). So the video relates in that way because when you're dancing, the person you focus on is your partner and nothing else matters. I think the dance marathon theme relates because it would be a "crowded room" that the subjects of the song could feel "alone" in but despite that they still have each other. Dark blue makes me think of water, as does the flood imagery used in the song so when they jumped off the edge in the end, I thought of a large body of water being below them. The lines, "Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition" makes me think of how as the hours wear on in the marathon the couples are slowing down (hence, "All I can see is the planets in a row suggesting its best that I slow down). and becoming sluggish but they're still holding on. Also, the lines "I'll wait for the ambulance to come, ambulance to come pick us up off the floor" reminds me of how the girl in the couple falls to the ground in the end. Additionally, "Have you ever been alone in a crowded room? Well I'm here with you." reminds me yet again of the concept that no matter what's going on they have each other. As for why they jumped in the end, that confused me as well. I guess it could be seen as a sort of release or freedom from what they just went through and regardless of however or where ever they land after they jump, they'll still have each other. I have come to realize that the sheet music I have for this song does not match the music being played in the recording. When I looked on their site, it says that it is a beginner's book and therefore the music is not fully transcribed. A: Usually all sheet music is a "compromise" The original song, had many instruments on it, now, they have to try to write/transcribe the music for piano, and try to make it sound as full as possible. if they wrote the piano parts exactly the way the song was done, there would be huge holes, where it would sound empty. A: Although many song meanings are ambiguous, to me the video Dark Blue represents a couple so in love; they're oblivious to all of the people around them. The video is about a dance competition between couples. The video focuses on two main couples, the one I just explained above (labeled couple 45) and one who envies what the other couple has (not sure what their # is). At the end, the envious couple ends up winning with couple 45 as the runner-ups. Although the envious couple has won, they're still envious of #45 because of the love the couple have. Couple 45 ultimately jump into the ocean together, signifying that no matter what happens, they're in it together or that they'll be there together.
