The composer, A. Carlos Gomez, was a Brazilian, and not surprising, the scenario for the opera is also. It was premiered at La Scala, Milan, I think in the 1870's; had a few performances, but since then has more or less fallen into almost complete obscurity. The Metropolitan Opera archives, lists the Overture for one program, and an aria from it on another, but none for the complete opera. Anyway, the Overture use to be a staple on concert programs years ago; Arthur Fiedler of "Boston Pops" fame, scheduled it quite often when he was the director of once great ensemble. I have searched and searched for the original, orchestral version of the Overture, but was not successful: the only thing I could find, was one recorded by a symphonic band: not bad - take a listen and see what you think. Alberich --------------------------------------------------- Just realized after listening to this piece for the umpteenth time, how portions of it resemble, are reminiscent of R. Wagner's "Rhenzi" Overture. Anyone agree? Alberich --------------------------------------------------- Thanks "Ms.Chicks" for responding to my request: appreciate it. A: I always thought his music was underrated, and I have yet to understand why he isn't advertised as the rest. I've never seen this opera staged, but I've heard excepts years and years ago. Wagner? Yep, I can see the resemblance. Can you laugh at the irony of that. Wagner turning over in his grave at this Brazilian composition resemblance. Its too bad Gomez's classical genius was overwhelmed by those who followed the traditional compositions in his country (which isn't classical). It's magical to listen to. Westerners could stand to embrace him more as well. (3 years, 11 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 14 hours ago.)
